A breeding plan often combines names, source links, appointments, ancestry notes and care dates. Pocket Yard keeps those records in a shared research workspace so your team can find the entered information in one place.
Build an identified pedigree
The structured pedigree tool records identified horses and their parent relationships. Stable IDs distinguish horses with the same name. You can add and edit horses, import a supported JSON or CSV plan, and export the entered research for review.
Validation rejects duplicate identities, missing parents and ancestry cycles. Imported records still need to be checked against reliable sources: correct file structure is not proof that an ancestry claim is true.
Review entered ancestry
The tool estimates pedigree inbreeding from the family relationships entered in the plan. Missing ancestry affects coverage and interpretation. Compare the entered information and its sources before relying on an estimate.
Sire and offspring comparisons use entered relationships and linked competition results. They do not substitute for an independent performance database or automatically discover every descendant.
Keep a planning date in view
The foaling calculator adds a selected planning interval to a valid service or conception date. Its default interval is 340 days and can be changed within the tool’s supported range. The result is an estimate, not a confirmed due date.
Record your vet-confirmed foaling window and appointments in the breeding plan. Gestation varies; care decisions should use professional advice and the mare’s actual circumstances.
Use external pedigree sources accurately
Links to Hippomundo, HorseTelex and Weatherbys open their own services. Their subscriptions or access conditions may apply. Pocket Yard does not include a connected licensed global pedigree database or their paid subscriptions.
Research tools, not compatibility certification
A common-name worksheet compares the ancestry names you enter. Neither that worksheet nor a model-based inbreeding estimate certifies genetic compatibility, predicts foal quality or provides a veterinary health assessment.
A practical first plan
- Record the mare and stallion identities and source links.
- Add verified parents and note gaps in the research.
- Record breeding goals and health-test references.
- Save the plan and export a copy for discussion with your adviser.
- Add confirmed appointments and dates to the yard calendar.
