Compare two hay supplier quotes by delivered cost per usable kilogram. A cheaper bale price can cost more when bale weights, delivery charges and wastage differ. Use your own measured weights and estimates; no account is needed.
Enter two quotes and compare their delivered costs.
Compare equal quantities fairly
Total cost = number of units × unit price + delivery charge. Usable kilograms = number of units × weight per unit × (1 − wastage percentage ÷ 100). Divide total cost by usable kilograms to compare the quotes.
With 20 bales weighing 20 kg each at £6, a £20 delivery charge and 5% wastage, the cost is £140 for 380 usable kg: about £0.368 per kg. Twenty 16 kg bales at £5 with the same delivery charge and wastage cost £120 for 304 usable kg: about £0.395 per kg. The lower bale price is the higher cost per usable kilogram in this example.
What the calculator does not decide
Price does not establish forage quality or suitability for your horses. Check the actual quote, forage analysis where appropriate, dust, storage, payment terms and delivery reliability. Include VAT in your entered prices if you pay it. This does not calculate a recommended ration or predict wastage.
Keep your next order organised
After choosing a supplier, use the stock-cover calculator to plan when to reorder. Pocket Yard’s shared stock records can help your team record deliveries, requests and issues.
